Mr. Chandru from ‘Bombat Bhojana’ at The Peshwa Restaurant

Just a few months back, ‘The Peshwa Restaurant’ started in Bangalore, with a mission to give a face to Authentic Maharashtrian Cuisine. The goal here is not to compete with any other type food but to make available the same childhood taste to all those Maharashtrian who have left their birth places and settled across different part of world. ‘The Peshwa’ in Bangalore is the first attempt towards this goal. While ‘The Peshwa’ provides home made taste, it also started a ‘movement’ to introduce Maharashtrian cuisine to non-Maharashtrian folks. Famous Kannada actor-cum-anchor Mr. Chandru’s ‘Bombat Bhojana’ acknowledgment of ‘The Peshwa’s’ work in this field is an important milestone towards achieving this goal. 'The Peshwa' will appear very soon on Suvarna TV.
Keep checking this blog for the schedule.

Gudi Padwa

Gudi Padwa is coming! It’s been many years since I celebrated Gudi Padwa, but I remember the celebrations when i was a kid. It was mostly helping dad in raising the Gudi with a long bamboo, neem leaves, kalash and all, then waiting for mom to finish cooking Puran-Poli, Kadhi, Vade etc. (She wouldn’t allow us to start till complete Naivedya thali is set and prasad is presented to God), and then spend all day eating gathi (battashe)! Don’t know how we could enjoy that extremely sweet thing! At least in those days words like calories and fat were not acting as watchmen for everything we eat.
For all those in Bangalore, we at "The Peshwa Restaurant" are celebrating this year's Gudi Padwa with something special. We have a special festive buffet that includes Puran Poli, kadhi, etc. Do visit!

Maharashtra Mandal and Gathi-Bheti group

On Saturday, very first time, I visited Maharashtra Mandal in Bangalore. It’s located at Majestic in a maze of one-ways. The building itself was an immediate disappointment. I was standing in front of the building and had to ask for directions. Not a single board anywhere with "Maharashtra Mandal" on it! There is a Kamath Restaurant in the same complex and I couldn’t find anything Marathi in there. I was there for a preparatory meeting regarding the upcoming Gathi-Bheti group event - "Ek Marathmola diwas" to be organized on 1st of May - Maharashtra Diwas. It was really good to see around 20-25 Maharashtrian artists and organizers exchanging ideas and planning for this event. These guys are organizing this event from last four years and each of those events has been a grand success. They are planning to have bunch of cultural events like lavani, natak, kirtan etc. I don’t think they will have any celebrity coming in
this time around, but there will be a big Maharashtrian lunch instead! No, food is not coming from "The Peshwa", they had already finalized a caterer from Kolhapur even before The Peshwa Restaurant started :) But "The Peshwa" will be involved in organizing this event and tickets will be available at the restaurant for all those who are in south Bangalore.

Keep checking this blog for tickets, timing and other event details.

Story of "The Peshwa"

Around the world if you notice, every culture spreads by using people's taste buds as canvases. When you say "chinese", you first think of chinese food - noodles and rice, then comes The Great Wall, Red Communism etc. When you think of Punjabi, well, here turbans might come first, but punjabi dishes are not far behind.
Talking about marathi culture, I am a maharashtrian and I have been around whole India and around the world in last 15 years. And one thing was clear - I can't spot a maharastrian in a crowd! Let me explain - Marathi people somehow lose their identity when they migrate. Rather, they merge with the locals so well, that they slowly get detached from their roots. (to some extent it happened to me as well after marrying a tamilian :-) ) So what is it that non-marathi people identify marathi people with, outside maharastra? Is it language? No, unlike tamilians or punjabis, two marathi people will start conversations either in Hindi or English. Is it Ajanta? No, its just a typical Indian restaurant name in US :-) So is it food? Well, how many places have you heard of where you get marathi food? Many think Maharashtrians only eat vada-pav and pav-bhaji at home - three times a day!
Me and my friends started this new concept - "The Peshwa Restaurant - Authentic Maharashtrian Cuisine" to do our bit in spreading marathi cuisine outside Maharashtra. We are trying to bring together best recipes from across Maharashtra right from Pune and Vidarbha and Kolhapur and Khandesh. There is Kolhapuri misal, Khandeshi Bharit, Gavran Bhakri, Festive Puran Poli and lots of other dishes.
But unlike other types of cuisines, there is no well-established pattern that we can follow when it comes to marathi cuisine. There are no standard items, there is no standard menu, there are no packagable combinations. So "The Peshwa" is coming up with unique options which will bring out the best marathi food to people. Since its a first in many ways than one, there will be some stumbling and hence some learnings along the way. We would really appreciate all the feedback and inputs that we can get from everyone. Thanks!
